THE STORY

The narrator grows up with an absent father and a story about that absence shaped by someone else's pain. Later, he begins to see that the explanation he inherited was not the whole truth. Becoming a parent does not make him instantly whole or certain; he stumbles while trying to remain present. The turning point is a choice about what to pass on. His children can receive care he once searched for himself. The scars still hurt, but they also show him where attention is needed. The song follows its narrator toward a family life built with more awareness of what absence can do.

Mi fada gone when mi just a three
Mama paint him dark, seh him enemy
She twist di story, fill mi head wid fight
Manipulation turn mi days to night

Mi hold on tight to every man mi see
Searchin' fi a role model, father fi be
But dem never stay, faces come and pass
Empty chair inna mi youth, heavy glass

Later mi know, truth a different side
It was mama pain weh she cyan't hide
Di wound still bleed, but it teach mi so
What mi never get, to mi children mi show

All di pain weh mi carry from di past
Turn mi stronger, build a love fi last
Every scar is a teacher in disguise
From di darkness, mi children see mi rise
Hard time forge yuh into who yuh be
Blessings grow outta tragedy

First pickney come when mi twenty-four
Mi was young, but mi heart open more
Mi try fi guide, but mi stumble, mi fall
Mi was broken too, still mi answer di call

Den di mother drift, love cyan't sustain
We raise dem youths but di fire nuh remain
Separation cut mi mother deep inside
She shut mi out, no word, no guide

But Jah send mi queen, true love mi find
Buildin' a family, one heart, one mind
Now four children, mi legacy grow
Dis time mi stand firm, mi let dem know

Fi dem mi live, mi strength, mi song
Wid love inna house, we forever strong

All di pain weh mi carry from di past
Turn mi stronger, build a love fi last
Every scar is a teacher in disguise
From di darkness, mi children see mi rise
Hard time forge yuh into who yuh be
Blessings grow outta tragedy
